Does anyone know what size of the tail light is for a 2003 vw jetta gls?

Do you mean the assembly or the bulb? Bulb will be in the owner's manual. Wal-Mart, Pep Boys, Autozone, O'Reilly's, Checkers, Canadian Tire all have books to look this up if you do not have an owner's manual, which does surprise me.
