Volswagen Jetta vs. Passat?

I'm a college student and my car recently broke down, so I'm looking at some used cars. A local dealer has 10 Volkswagens, all around $5000-$10000 and all 2000-2004 model years. Since they seem to be about the same price, what are the pros and cons of the Jetta and Passat? Is one significantly better than the other? Which would you recommend and why? Or should I forget about Volkswagen and look for something different altogether?
