How do I fix the EPC light on my 2003 VW Jetta?

The engine and EPC just light randomly came on in my jetta. When you turn on the car it will die unless you hold your foot on the gas five about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes it will run but its a little shaky and the light stays on. Help!
