Why does my car make a grinding noise when i let of the clutch and it does not move?

I was on my way back from san antonio to corpus and something soind like ot broke and it wont take off any more and when i put it in gear and let go of the clutch it makes a gringing noise. Its an 89 jetta. thanks for your time any suggestions would help.
