Why is my airbag light on in my 2003 Jetta?

First poster is spot-on. As for the airbag light, find a repair place NOT PEP BOYS, in fact, please do not go there again for any work on your Jetta, other than an oil change. Find a repair place that does work on German cars. If you can find one that does VW/Audi specifically, that is even better. Call them up, and ask them if they have a VAG-COM. If they do, bring the Jetta down there, and tell them you want the airbag light scanned. From there, it could be a loose connection, or (hopefully not), a broken connection. The scan will tell them where to go.
