Will two mufflers in a row make my car quieter?

I own a 1990 Jetta GLI 16V with some mods. It has two Dellorto DHLA 48 carbs. It will also have a stainless steel header and no catalytic converter. Will placing... lets say two magnaflow mufflers in a row make less noise or more noise? Or should I use just one? I don't want the car to be extremely loud, but I want it to sound nice. Any ideas?
